JUSTICE CENTER SHOPS

Calling all merchants and lawyers. This small retail development is planned for Williams Way just south of the new Fort Bend Justice Center. I see a great spot for a law office, a restaurant, and a copy service. The overview is below.

Make your best lease today before its all gone.

  1. Why are you acting as an ad man for these retail developers? You are an elected official or are you being sarcastic? Do we pay our tax dollars for you to do their bidding or any of the commissioners to work for them?

  2. The City of Richmond has the highest tax rate in the county, 79 cents. One of the main reasons is because almost 50% of Richmond's taxable property is taken up be Fort Bend County's buildings. This development will add some taxable value to Richmond's tax rolls, both in real property and sales tax receipts. I'm happy about that and I would like to see this project succeed.
Second, this project gives me hope that Fort Bend's economy is looking up. That's a good thing.

  3. That doesn't mean an elected official, as so many do, should become the pitch man for these companies. You represent the people not these corporations. Be happy about it but remember your role and those that supported you in many ways.

  4. I thought that I was supporting the people of Richmond by helping grow their tax base, so that maybe their taxes could be lowered in the future. Many of Richmond's citizens are on a fixed income and many others earn substantially less than the median income for the County. Lower taxes would really help these people out. There is some development that is responsible and good for the citizens.

  5. You know how many times that argument has been pitched while our taxes continue to rise? Sales tax, as you already know, is one of the most unstable of revenue sources in down economies. I will state it once again. As an elected official it is fine for you to be happy about it, but why become their pitch man? Hopefully no one involved with that development is contributing to your campaign or anyone elses on the court. I sure hope you don't end up like the rest of that commission Richard. Perceived conflicts, IMO, are conflicts of interest.

What's wrong with public service being just that? Do we have to keep seeing the same old tire arguments dusted off to sell some of these projects? We're building a minor league stadium too in SL when we are 20 minutes from major league ball. Reducing government spending in a slow economy is the best way to balance the budgets. Wasn't that TIRZ fund nearly broke last year? Stop giving away the bath water with the baby. I know you are only 1, but stand up to the rest of the court. Don't become just another one of them. That's not why you won and you know it.

  6. "Make your best lease today before its all gone."

This isn't a direct marketing effort? Shouldn't they pay you for this ad space? This is not what I pay taxes for.

  7. Is there any development that I can approve of? And why are you against Richmond expanding their tax base, ad valorem or sales tax?

  8. Now you are being the lawyer and retooling my words. I said it isn't your job on our dime to make this sale, not "And why are you against Richmond expanding their tax base, ad valorem or sales tax?"--And why is it good for our property taxes to continue to rise in a slow economy? It's only good for the county or city budgets, not us. Once again, reduce the size and spending of government. Let these companies do their own sales pitches. You are not paid by them (I hope), but us, as you are elected too. Restrict the growth of government. Support rate and appraisal caps to 2-3% a year and then force government to operate within those constraints. Haven't enough people lost their homes and property or does that not matter anymore?

Don't become a pitch man for these companies. No need to spin this in your rebuttal to mean anything else. I'm saying EXACTLY what I intend and yes I was one of your ardent supporters, but am seriously reconsidering and perhaps looking for another challenger if you continue in this direction. We have enough unsustainable development vendor feeding types on the commission already. Enough is enough!

--And why is Hebert moving forward with the tolling of TX99 with no word from you about it? Better go look at your 4x8s again and remember your promise, or don't those matter after the election?

  9. "Is there any development that I can approve of?"

There is a big difference between approving and advertising, especially if you are an elected official. Come on Richard.

  10. Is there any update on the subsidence problem and how it is being addressed?
